Practising for Grade 6 exams and systemic tests

Grade 6 is the last year of the Intermediate Phase. Learners write formal assessment tasks through the year and end of year examinations in Term 4, and in several provinces they also sit systemic or provincial assessments in Language and Mathematics.
What makes Grade 6 different from the grades above it is how the practice should be done. An eleven year old gets very little out of a two hour paper alone at a desk. Short sessions, one section at a time, with someone alongside to talk the answers through, work far better and are far more likely to actually happen.
The papers below are sorted the same way as every other grade on this site: by subject, then year, then assessment period, with the memorandum in the same folder wherever one was released.

How to practise with a Grade 6 learner

Four short steps. This works far better as a twenty minute routine than a Saturday morning marathon.

Pick one section, not the paper

Choose a single section and do only that. Finishing something builds more confidence than half finishing a whole paper.

Set a timer for twenty minutes

A short, visible limit keeps focus up and makes the session feel manageable. Stop when the timer goes, even if it is not finished.

Mark it together, out loud

Go through the memo side by side and ask why the answer is what it is. The conversation is where most of the learning happens at this age.

Keep a list of the tricky ones

A few lines is enough. Come back to that list before the next assessment rather than redoing whole papers.

Grade 6 past papers, answered

Six: Home Language, First Additional Language, Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Technology, Social Sciences, and Life Skills. Social Sciences covers both History and Geography at this level.
Provincial assessments written in selected grades to measure how learners are doing against the curriculum. The Western Cape, for example, tests Language and Mathematics in Grades 3, 6 and 9. They do not count towards a school report, but they are a useful practical indicator of where a learner stands.
Twenty to thirty minutes is usually the sweet spot. Beyond that concentration drops and the session starts doing more harm than good. Two short sessions in a week beat one long one.
Yes, wherever the marking guideline was released with the paper. Both files sit in the same folder.
For most Grade 6 learners, yes. Marking together and talking through the answers is the part that teaches. Working alone in silence and handing over a marked page teaches much less.

Short practice sessions now, real confidence in Grade 7.
