The first year of the Senior Phase curriculum
Grade 7 is the first year of the Senior Phase, even though most South African learners are still at primary school when they write it. That is where the jump comes from. Subjects that did not exist before appear on the timetable: Economic and Management Sciences, Technology, and Natural Sciences as a subject in its own right rather than part of a combined one.
Formal examinations start carrying real weight here too. For a lot of learners the June Grade 7 paper is the first proper exam they have written, and the shock is usually about format rather than content.
Working through one or two past papers takes most of that shock away. A learner who has seen how a Grade 7 Natural Sciences paper is laid out, how the marks are split and what a four mark question expects, walks in calmer and writes better.
